Myrtle (Molly) Kool, the first female licenced ship¿s captain in North America. Born in Alma, New Brunswick in 1916, Molly was the daughter of a Dutch sea captain. She spent summers sailing on the waters in and around the Bay of Fundy with her father, learning about life at sea and becoming an accomplished sailor. After high school, Molly convinced the Merchant Marine School in Saint John, New Brunswick, to admit her as a student; she was the only woman to ever attend the school. In 1937 she obtained her Mate¿s Certificate and became a mate on her father¿s 70-foot scow, the Jean K. In 1939, she obtained her coastal Master¿s Certificate and graduated from the Marchant Marine Institute in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She was first female deep sea Captain in North America. At the time, she was only the second woman in the world to hold that achievement.
