Additional Information
Louis Stephen St-Laurent (1882-1973). Born in Compton, Quebec, St-Laurent was twelfth Prime Minister of Canada. Serving from 1948 to 1957, he was considered instrumental in the foundation of the social welfare system, and laying the groundwork for universal healthcare. St-Laurent is well known for being a leading proponent in the creation of North Atlantic Treaty Organization [NATO] in 1949, and his work with Lester B. Pearson in the solution of the Suez Crisis is widely considered the foundation of modern peacekeeping.
